Static Main Page on Blog?

May 16, 2009 by lindac

Linda, I have another question which I thought might be of interest to others also. I have been browsing other sites in my niche and have noticed that a number of them have a static home page. I was wondering if there is an advantage to having a landing page that is a static home page vs one which changes with each post addition? My thought was to develop a post which I would mark as sticky which could serve as a static landing page when someone might click on the “home” link.
Thanks again, Ken, http://gonebassfishing.com

Hey Ken…

That’s a good one! If you’re using the blog for a mini site or a commercial site, yes there’s a benefit to having a static main page. The benefit is that it’s a lot easier to get that page to rank for specific key phrase if the content isn’t changing constantly.

On my own mini-site blogs, I use static content on the main page, and have the articles appear in the sidebar as they’re posted. I also go into settings and set the blog to show only one post, that way the main page stays static even as I post new articles. It’s only on a site like this one, that’s primarily based on content, that I keep the main page changing with fresh content.

Using the “sticky” is a good way to do it. You can also go into Settings –> Reading and set another page as your main page, but making a post sticky is faster and easier.
